The Last Waltz

The Band was one of the most influential and talented rock groups to emerge from the seventies. I was initially turned on to this film by my dad, who is a big Dylan fan. But while The Band's country rock sound may not be for everyone, this beautiful film has gained a large following. And the DVD transfer is rich, clean and with award-winning voice commentary!

Director Martin Scorcese weaves band interviews, live performances, and choreographed music in what is considered one of the best rock films ever made. The concept is simple, throw a good-bye, Thanksgiving concert, and invite famous musicians that have been part of your storied career. Some of the special guests include Ronnie Hawkins, Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, The Staples, Joni Mitchell, Dr. John, Muddy Waters, Emmylou Harris, Ron Wood, and of course Bob Dylan.

The Band was: Robbie Robertson (guitar); Richard Manuel (piano, harmonica, drums, saxophone); Garth Hudson (organ, piano, clavinet, accordion, synthesizer, saxophone); Rick Danko (bass guitar, violin, trombone); and Levon Helm (drums, mandolin, guitar, bass guitar). The film emphasizes the musical diversity of the members, as you get to see each member, with the exception of Robertson, play a secondary instrument.

There are moments of great joy as the musicians celebrate great songs on stage, as well as moments of sadness, as they realize it is all about to end. A truly great rental!

I think it's sad that no one has commented on The Last Waltz, so I'm doing just that.
