It is suffice to say that this quirky, independent feature is one of my favorite films. It you haven't seen it, please consider renting it. Sofia Coppola was nominated for Best Director. (The first time for a women.) And while she did not take home an Oscar, it did get Best Original Screenplay. A beautiful film. And a must see.
I'm with Ryan. Perhaps even more so. I truly did not like this movie and find it shows Sofia Coppola to be an untalented filmmaker. The movie is quite xenophobic, though this is because of the rampant snotty arrogance Coppola so effortlessly injects her two main characters with (especially Johansson's character, the Coppola substitute). It's not surprising this same behavior seems to have sprung up in her most recent movie (though I haven't seen it). There's an insightful article on the internet that asks an American viewer to imagine the two main characters as French and the Japanese as Americans. The xenophobia aside, the movie is very slight. Both main characters are pretty vapid and empty. Though, once again, especially the stand-in for Coppola. I'll admit there's about 3 seconds of authentic romance, or some semblance of it. But it is clearly overwhelmed by the snotty, mean, self-absorbed nonsense that (in my opinion) makes up most of the movie.
Just my 2 cents. I definitely say people should watch it and decide for themselves.
not only was this movie great in it's moments of quiet brilliance, but it's proof that you don't need obvious gimmicks in a film about unconventional romance. i enjoyed bill murray's subtle performance. i thought the scene with scarlett and murray laying next to each other was possibly one of the sexiest and most real moments in cinematic history because of it's chaste tastefulness. much like in her directing debut virgin suicides, coppola injects inventive touches in her films that are original and innovative.
For someone who works in entertainment, you would think I'd spend a lot of time dissecting the movies I watch. The truth is, I'm just not that deep and I only ever come out of a movie thinking one of two things: either I liked it, or I didn't. I quite liked this movie. I think I just liked the character Murray played. Simple as that.

It is pretty good. Love Bill Murray.
I know I have to see it sometime, but I keep putting it off... If it's this highly recommended, I'll take a look-see soon.
I enjoyed it too - Murray was great in it . . .
Overrated. Piece. Of. Trash. Movie.
Sry2sy
Pru, I think Murray was perfect in the role.
Mish, it's a good lazy Sunday rental.
Diane, I've watched it twice.
Ryan, maybe a little overrated.

PKitty, I hear you on the "quiet brilliance" statement. That's exactly how I felt watching something as moving and beautiful as this film.
have always meant to see it...heard so much about it and someone who lived in japan told me that it has some real honest observations about the place.
I haven't seen it. That said, my review of it based on these reviews is that it's "divisive in the extreme."
Spoon, honest observations seems to bolster my belief in this film.
LA, all opinions welcome. I agree with V that it's worth seeing to yield an unbias view.

Edit, that's the best reason to like a movie.
Wanted to get it this weekend, but went to see 'As it is in heaven' instead. Subtitled from Norway but honest...very good! Go see it!
