Review: Basic Instinct 2

The reviews were so negative for BI2, that my decision to rent it was dubious at best. It had been deemed one of the worst movie of 2006 by almost everyone. So during my screening I kept waiting for it to become awful. Surprisingly it turned out to be quite entertaining. Now please don’t misinterpret my conclusion, this film is by no means a masterpiece. But it far surpasses the horrible press that initially surrounded it.

I never watched the original film, made famous over a decade ago with Sharon Stone’s famous vagina shot. But she has reprised her role of mystery writer Catherine Tramell, for this sequel, complete with her insatiable appetite for sex. Catherine now resides in London, and finds herself accused of murder. But with all decent psychological thrillers, the line to what is real and what is implied is deeply blurred.

As the plot thickens, and shrink Michael Glass (David Morrissey) becomes deeply involved with patient Catherine, (and her exploits both in and out of bed) the familiar battle of the sexes emerges. (One guess on which gender wins.) This is a fun rental, with enough skin to keep both you and your date interested. And even I liked the ending.

Sounds like a good movie to me. I didn't see the first one either, and didn't know about the negative press for the sequel.

I'm a bit weary of near universal bad press as well. Especially when much of the bad press are the same rubber stamp critics who call every unfunny summer comedy a "laugh riot." And call every lame blockbuster "gripping" and "intense" (not to mention adding "the year's must see"). I mean, I'm fairly certain the movie still isn't worth seeing in the theater, but it's also unlikely to be so much worse than similar bad flicks. I'm actually thinking of another movie that went through a similar situation, GIGLI. I haven't seen that either, but was a bit amused to read a favorite film critic of mine (Jonathan Rosenbaum) basically stick up for the movie by saying it was indeed a bad movie, but perhaps not the worst movie of all time, lol.

Anyway, glad to hear BI2 was a fun genre exercise. I'll admit Sharon Stone has had some very sexy roles, but the handful of times I've seen her in interviews, well, she comes off as strange and scary. Not sure if YouTube (or a similar site) has it, but if anyone is curious, try to track down Stone's BI2 appearance on the Daily Show.

I'd watch it. I'm fond of really bad movies. Showgirls is one of my all time favorites. Was it better than Gigli?

Nothing is worse that Gigli. I'd watch a Showgirls marathon before even thinking about watching Gigli again.

I haven't seen this or the original... Glad to hear its not as bad as everyone made it out to be.

Dan, it's good if you have a sense of humor and don't mind a little skin.

V, that's a perfect point!! Something is not right when they all condemn or commend a film before the wine has settled into the glass.

Pru, Showgirls rocked!! You rock!! And what's so wrong with a lap dance? Can't we all just get along?

Mish, you'll see naked people.

Amber, facebook is messing-up your computer!! Come back to blogger!!

You know what the key was here? Keeping your expectations low. If only I could apply this philosophy to men, I might have a better outcome.

I saw her appearance on the Daily Show. It was a little tense. Apparently Jon Stewart had previously ragged her pretty bad, and she was not too happy about it. She looked like she wanted to turn him into a frog or something.

I think la is right! Have low expectations and you can only be pleasantly surprised, no????

LA, you gals should know better by now. Although maybe it's geographical.

Captain, I have made it my general rule to kiss Sharon Stone's ass. Metaphorically. (And literally, if given the chance.)

Spoon, you got to make them work for the booty.

i was a bit skeptical until you said her character resides in london. i have two major weaknesses: all things affiiliated with the UK and bad movies. BI2 kills two birds with one...um...stone.

I think I might have to change my comment. I forgot about Mishy's diatribe on just how bad GIGLI was.

i forgot to ask, is there full frontal nudity this time around, and does it involve the british dude?

PK, the most redeeming quality of this film is the location scouting. They purposely sought places not commonly known. Visually, this picture rocks!! You might just like this film for this single reason.

I did not rent the director's cut, only because I couldn't find it. It might show FFN. The theactrical version is rather watered-down.
