The French New Wave

Directors François Truffaut, Louis Malle, Jean-Luc Godard, and Eric Rohmer, (note my earlier review of “Chloe in the Afternoon”) are four icons from la Nouvelle Vague or New Wave. In many ways, todays popular culture is indebted to the style and craft of these French filmmakers.

Once upon a time, in the late 1950s, a movement began among a group of young people. These individuals had assembled around film critic Andre Bazin, and essential revolted against the traditional motion picture studio. The assembly line process perfected in Hollywood was too far removed from actual human spirit. Movies from big production studios were more interested in quantity rather that quality. They felt each member was in reality an auteur (or author) of his or her own production. In making a film, each would be putting their own signature on their film, elevating their craft in the process to art, as opposed to a mass media/studio production.

Because of the passion, talent and dedication involved not just in making movies, but the critical analysis they shared with each other, several films emerged from this period that continue to shine to this day. The 400 Blows, (currently watching/reviewing) Jules and Jim, Breathless, and Hiroshima, Mon Amour are a few that received international success and bought attention to to the movement.

If you ever get a chance to check out any films from this period, I recommend all I have listed here. (I’ve seen many from this period, but enjoy watching them again.)

Louis Malle is one of my favorites. He had the distinction of being married to the wonderful Candice Bergen. Be sure to see "Murmur of the Heart". I love foreign films and especially the French New Wave era. Godard is also excellent.

Great site! I like what you've done with the place!!

Flix you are speaking my language. It's making me horny baby.

I've seen this, A few times. Back to back with Irma Vep. It also goes down smooth with 'The Single Girl'.

Louis Malle made a film where A mother seduces her real son, GASP.

Didn't Breathless get badly remade with Richard Gere?

I love Jean Seberg's look. Did Mia Farrow steal it?

I saw the film with her and Jean-Paul Belmondo. Didn't he speak French and she spoke English and some bad French in the movie? Was it Breathless? I thought it was called something else. Who directed it? It was tres cool.

Ffleur, I think you speak of Breathless. It was directed by Godard. These films are so hip and real. You really have to consider when they were made, to fully appreciate them!!

Roger that Flixy. I loved the old cars and the fashion in that movie. 1960's Paris was cool.
