The Mothman Prophecies is based on the book of the same name and follows the paranormal events that actually occurred in Point Pleasant, West Virginia during 1966-67. While the popular media seemed to pan this release, I actually found it both fascinating and quite frightening.

The book and movie differ only in the sense that Hollywood writers feel the need to embellish the plot to make a true story more interesting. In this case, it is the film’s weakness. But once I finished watching TMP, (in the dark I might add) I went online and read about the actual Mothman encounters.

Big props to Richard Gere. He works with limited material and keeps the story together. The ambient tone of this production, the structure, is prominent and eerie. On this level the film succeeds.

If you catch it on the rental shelf, and you are in the mood for a creepy flick that doesn’t involve any violence, check it out. And then go online and read what really happened.

I wikipedia'ed to find out what actually happened in Point Place, Va, and all I have to say is: OH. MY. GOD.

I don't like bugs at the best of times. I would die if I came across a mothman. DIE.

Pru, it wasn't that bad.

Amber, it did star Debra Messing. She was only in a couple of scenes in the beginning of the film. I thought she was quite effective. And the phone calls throughout the film were super creepy.

Mish, tell me about it. After I saw the movie I also researched the topic, and that's what really was scary!

I saw this movie when it first came out on DVD and it CREEPED ME OUT! I also looked online to see what actually happened and was even more creeped out. Have to admit, I'm a big fan of Gere's so I appreciate almost everything he's done. I agree with you that this film got panned and overlooked by the general population.
