The Snowman

With the Christmas Season upon us, and the snow and cold gripping most of the USA, I felt it would be appropriate to review a wonderful animated short for children and adults alike. "The Snowman" is a 26-minute story based on the soft crayon-styled drawing of Raymond Briggs' book of the same name. Released in Britain in 1982, it is truly a timeless classic that holds it's own against the over-digitized world we live in today. I love this story, and can strongly recommend it as a gift for anybody that enjoys a seasonal uplift, adults included!

Director Diane Jackson wisely duplicates Briggs crayon look, adding a gentle vibrating effect to the characters, that make them even more real. The story centers around a young boy that builds a snowman that comes to life, and the great adventure they share one winter night. There are no spoken words, but the musical score is well matched for the action. And the only singing, the climatic Alex Jones' "Walking In Air" may well bring a tear to your eye. This short is full of joy. It truly is a great gem!

Ha-ha! You're funny. This seemed an appropriate review based on all the snow we have!

Actually, I love movies like this. Have you seen Because of Winn-Dixie? Well, I haven't seen it, but I read it, and it's such a treasure for children and adults alike. I like entertainment that transcends in that way.

Markus, it will be a good cry for sure!!

Hey LA, I stayed up until 3am watching Donnie Darko. Then I was up at 7 am, driving all over this frozen tundra! But thanks for the shout.

I did scroll down on Dlisted, and caught FMouie's prose. Great stuff!
